1. George Gadd - Great Power

This is me being all angry and grrrrr.

  2. George Gadd - Women I Belong To

I’d say this was the song that gave me the momentum to start the ‘Thorneloe’ EP properly. The night before I wrote it, I went to go see two of my personal idols (Brian Fallon (The Gaslight Anthem) and Dan Andriano (Alkaline Trio)) on The Revival Tour and, at that point, I just wanted to somehow become them. I wrote this song, sleep deprived, on the train back to Birmingham and wrote the chorus quickly as soon as I got back to my room and immediately went on a short tour of the block of flats I lived in and played that song to everyone that I knew was in. This is the song where I get the most people asking me about the lyrics behind it, it goes from being about past girlfriends (“We waltzed in the hurricane of a love that decayed”) to flings (“From the fire escape, to the coldness of your skin”).

You can hear ‘Women I Belong To’ and the rest of ‘Thorneloe’ over at bandcamp.

  3. George Gadd - Bride/Beast

The first verse and guitar part were written for this directly after I had finished writing my last EP ‘Exit Strategy’ (which you can find here), I did this so that what would become ‘Thorneloe’ had some kind of flourish of the first EP. I had a really broad plan on what to do with it musically and had ideas of emulating the whistle in the introduction to Billy Joel’s ‘The Stranger’ and having a lot of field recordings of people in the centre of Birmingham going about their daily business, I also wrote several verses which may see the light of day one day. In every tracklisting that I conjured up, this was always seen as the first track as it segues from the adolescent alienation of ‘Exit Strategy’ and moves more into the decadent heart break of ‘Thorneloe’. My friend Luke did the unnerving vocals in the intro and as well as playing a heavy piano on this track, he also decorated ‘Leave Me In The Dark’ perfectly.

The EP that this track is taken from can be found on my bandcamp.
